Robotic Process Automation (RPA) - what you need to know RPA is the technology where software robots are programmed and configured to perform repetitive, time-consuming, high-volume, manual tasks. By interacting with existing computer software and applications just as a human would, software robots can open email attachments, complete e-forms, record and re-key data, and perform other tasks that mimic human action. These tasks can include queries, calculations, and maintenance of records and transactions. The RPA technology global market reached $271 million in 2016 and is expected to grow to $1.2 billion by 2021, at a compound annual growth rate of 36%. The benefits that RPA can deliver explain this rapid growth; reduced costs, improved productivity, enhanced compliance and customer experiences which ultimately translate to competitive advantage. RPA software allows developers to tailor complex automation to a company’s processes. When an RPA robot is at work, it performs tasks just like a human would: logging in, operating applications, entering data, performing complex calculations and logging out. RPA at Work in Business An example of RPA in a typical business scenario would involve the robot accessing a user's email or shared inbox, locating customer messages with excel files attached and uploading each one into a process, for example, customer invoice queries . The process can be attached to a workflow in a BPM platform which notifies a human user that new queries have been received. The employee can review the query and be guided through the remainder of the process, from contacting the customer for more information to sending the query out to multiple departments for feedback and/or approvals of any invoice adjustments required. The end to end process is captured and automated with total transparency and accountability leading to accuracy, consistency and a faster time to resolution ultimately resulting in cost reduction and an improved employee and customer experience. Summary As demonstrated above, there are many benefits to RPA. Combining RPA with BPM provides the most powerful platform to enable digital business transformation. RPA technology reduces costs and minimizes human errors, replacing a human in repetitive tasks, while BPM provides the methodology, the change management, the process orchestration, and the full process life-cycle management.
